Director

Our two-day intensive Director courses are done in 4 phases to fit the
schedule of the working professional or the full-time student who wishes to
learn about filmmaking.

Course One

      The Director tells the story of the film through his/her creative vision. 
He or she takes all of the credit if the film is successful and all of the blame if it fails. 
A Director’s passion for his or her art should shake him or her to the core of
their being.

      In Course one of the Director series, we will help you find your focus,
develop your Director skills, and experience your passion through this art form.

      A Directors job begins with translating a script through the camera and
to the screen.

      In this first course in the series you will learn that the Director is the leader
of the movie, he or she must know how to set the mood of the film, delegate to the crew, inspire the actors to get the performances desired, work within the budget
while still getting the shots needed.

In course one of the Director series students will work on:


  1. How to find, understand, and visualize the screenplay.
    Putting your own story into a screenplay.
    The film budget – understanding what it means to the Director’s vision.
    Storyboarding – knowing what you’re going to shoot.
    Working with Actors
    Creating a shot list
    Setting the mood
    Determining shot locations
    Script Supervisor – The importance of
    Crew, their functions and how they relate to the Director’s position

In Course One of the two-day intensive Director course, students receive the following:

The cost of Course One of the two-day Director course is $350.00.

Course Two

      A Director’s tools are his or her imagination, their skill with the
camera, lenses, and knowing what kind of lighting is going to set the mood for
their film.

      Learn how to tell the story artistically, emotionally, mentally, and verbally.

      There is such a thing as Director speak, it’s the language and grammar
you need to know to function well in this key position.

      Second Course Director series, students will study:


  1. The camera and lenses – work hands-on with the camera and lenses.
    Framing a shot – Telling the story. Which shot is best?
    Camera movement.
    Coverage, cutaways, and inserts. There are differences you need to know
    Setting a shooting ratio – Saving time and money.
    Crossing the axis – To cross or not to cross.

In Course Two of the two-day intensive Director course, students receive the following:

The cost of Course Two of the two-day Director course is $350.00.

February – 10th & 11th

or

March – 10th & 11th



Course Three

      You will get hands-on experience by making a short film of your own.

      Take everything you’ve learned from courses One and Two and put them
into practice in the final course of the series by making a short film.

      As well as Directing, students will rotate into the various production
positions so that they have hands-on experience and a deep understanding of
how they will work with their future film crews.

The prerequisite for Course Three is Director Course One and Director Course Two.

Upon completion of Course Three of the two-day intensive Director course, students receive the following:

    Study Reference Materials

The cost of Course Three of the two-day Director course is $450.00.

Course Dates:

February – 17th & 18th

or

March – 17th & 18th


Course Four

      The final stage of the Director is seeing the project through the
editing process.

      In the final course of the Director series, you will work with an
editor to put the scenes of the short film together.

      Then you will discuss and work on putting your shots together, pacing,
scene length, choosing the best take. Discuss sound and music and it’s importance
in the movie.

      Learn the difference between editing softwares.

Upon completion of Course Four of the two-day intensive Director course, students receive the following:


  1. School Badge
    Academy of Film Arts T-Shirt
    A copy of the Short Film you worked on in Course Three
    Academy of Film Arts Course Completion Certificate
    One-Year subscription to MovieMaker Magazine

The cost of Course Four of the two-day Director course is $350.00.

February – 24th & 25th

March 24th & 25th



One-Week Director Course

Take everything from courses one through four of the Director weekend series and learn it from Monday through Saturday in our One-Week Director Course.

 

The cost of the One-Week Director Course is $1,495.00.

Course Dates:

January 22nd – 27th

or

February 26th – March 3rd

or

March 19th – 24th
